Athleads vs Wyscout: Which One Does Your Scouting Department Need?

Wyscout is where you watch players. Athleads is where everything else about them lives: every provider's data, every report, salary expectations and the department's workflow, on one player profile. Here is how they differ, how they work together, and what each costs to grow.

Most clubs asking "Athleads or Wyscout?" are really asking two questions: where do we watch players, and where does everything else about them live?

The short answer: they do different jobs. Wyscout is a video and data library. Athleads brings the rest of the scouting department into one place: the data from every provider you subscribe to, every report, details like salary expectations and agent contact, and the schedules and tasks around them, all on one player profile, with AI that works only on your own data. Many departments end up with both, and the useful decision is which one you need first.

This post is written by the Athleads team, so read it with that in mind. We have tried to be fair, and we link to Hudl's own pages so you can check the Wyscout details yourself.

What each one is

Wyscout is owned by Hudl, which also owns InStat and StatsBomb. It gives clubs match video and data across more than 1,000 competitions, according to Hudl's Wyscout FAQ, with a separate youth pack. On top of the video it has player search, player lists, rankings, a shadow team and PDF reports.

Athleads is a scouting platform built so a department stops jumping between tools. No more player notes in WhatsApp, reports in email, and a tab open for every data provider's website. Each player has one profile with official Sportmonks data, data from the providers your club already subscribes to (such as StatsBomb, Impect or Noisefeed, connected with your own licence), every report your scouts have written, and your own fields, such as salary expectations, agent contact or transfer fee. AI summarizes every report on a player, compares players, and finds players from a plain-language search, using only your data.

The big difference: Athleads does not host match video. If your scouts watch most players on video, you still need a video source.

Where Wyscout is stronger

Be clear about this, because it is the main reason clubs keep Wyscout.

  • Video. If you cannot travel to a league, Wyscout is how you see it. Athleads has nothing to replace that.
  • Coverage. Over 1,000 competitions is a lot of football you can reach from a desk.
  • The Hudl ecosystem. If your analysts already work in Hudl and Sportscode, clips and matches move between tools easily.

Note how video access is metered. On Hudl's pricing page at the time of writing, the entry Copper package includes 70 minutes of clip views a month and no full-match views. Full matches start at the Gold package. Ask what your scouts actually watch in a month before you choose a tier.

Where Athleads is stronger

  • One player profile for everything. Provider data, every report, notes, salary expectations and agent details sit on the same page. Nobody asks "who has the latest on him?" in a group chat.
  • It fits how you already work. Your report templates, your player fields, your views and boards. You set Athleads up around your department's process instead of learning ours.
  • Pricing that does not punish a big network. You pay only for the people who run your scouting, like the head of scouting, their assistant or whoever plans the schedule. Everyone who creates content, from scouts writing reports to youth coaches, joins free, because the more they write, the more your club knows. Viewers are free too, so adding ten regional scouts or giving the first-team coach access costs nothing. The price does not depend on which league your club plays in.
  • Many reports, one picture. When five scouts have seen a player, the AI summary turns their reports into strengths, weaknesses and a recommended next step. You read one page instead of five reports.
  • Running the department. Fixtures with lineups, a "seen before" marker for players you have already scouted, a shared calendar, tasks, and scouting trips with the travel between games worked out.

How clubs use both

A common split looks like this:

  1. Find and watch in Wyscout: search, clips, full matches.
  2. Write it down in Athleads: one report per viewing, on the player's profile.
  3. Decide in Athleads: boards, the AI summary, the salary expectations, and the conversation with the head of recruitment.

The handover is the player. The scout watches in one tab and writes in the other. The report, not the video, is what the club keeps when the scout moves on.

How to choose

  • Your scouts mostly watch on video, and reports are already under control: Wyscout first.
  • Your scouts mostly watch live, or your scouting lives in WhatsApp, email and spreadsheets: Athleads first.
  • You have both problems: use both. The cost question is which Wyscout package you really need once reports and decisions live somewhere else. On the Athleads side, you pay only for the people who run your scouting, so your whole scouting network can join. Our post on Wyscout alternatives for smaller clubs and freelance scouts goes through the trade-offs.

Whatever you pick, run the same real job in each tool during the trial. Write one report and build one shortlist from scratch.

The short version

  • Wyscout is where you watch players. Athleads is where everything else about them lives: every provider's data, every report, salary expectations and your workflow.
  • Athleads does not host video, so a video-heavy department still needs a video source.
  • Athleads fits your process, not the other way round, and you pay only for the people who run your scouting. Scouts and coaches who create content join free.
  • Book a demo and we will show it on your own players.
